The 2010 NOBIDAN Business Meeting was called to order by the Chair, Clara M. Baity at 5:15 p.m.

Introductions

Chair, Clara Baity introduced the NOBIDAN Executive Committee and all members were present:

  • Betty Villere Austin- Chair elect
  • Rojean Williams- Treasurer
  • Michele Lites- Secretary
  • Fabiola Gains-immediate Past Chair

Minutes 2009 – Denver

Minutes were read and distributed to the membership by the Secretary, Michele Lites.
Three name corrections were made.

Betty Villere Austin moved the minutes be accepted with the corrections, the motion was seconded by Faye Walker Dixon. Motion carried.

When the membership directory was distributed a suggestion was made that a student directory be compiled and distributed or some online mechanism be available for students to communicate.

Clara paused to introduce a guest and distinguished ADA Board member Evelyn Crayton.

Mrs. Crayton addressed the membership and discussed the following changes within ADA:

  • There is a current proposal before the House of Delegates and the ADA Board to consider changing the name of the American Dietetic Association to include the word nutrition.

ADA members will be emailed or surveyed before the vote, but the vote is expected soon.

Member Gladys Jennings, expressed the need to review the name ADA because she suggested that the public may understand better what dietitians do and a name change may improve a registered dietitian’s credibility because it could distinguish us from unregistered nutritionist.

Clara Baity commented that the name NOBIDAN is already very clear and states our purpose because it encompasses both the word nutrition and dietetics.

  • The need for more participation and volunteers from NOBIDAN for ADA projects to improve our MIG’s visibility and viability within the organization. She suggested the following areas that members should consider getting involved in:
    • Kids Eat Right Campaign (ADA/Foundation program -Focus is to decrease obesity)
    • Reviewing Papers
    • Media Spokesperson Training
    • Diversity and Leadership Trainings
    • Leadership Offices within ADA

Mrs. Crayton expressed her wishes that all members of NOBIDAN enjoy and have a productive time at FNCE. She reminded the membership that she represents NOBIDAN and suggested any member with any concerns could contact her.

Clara also mentioned the productive Executive board meeting and explained that NOBIDAN will be working with Dr. Ulric Chung, Executive Director of CADE on the concerns and issues of minority students seeking degrees in the field of dietetics.

The business meeting resumed with the Treasurers report.

Treasurers Report

Was read and submitted by Rojean Williams and a copy will be attached to the minutes.
